1What homeopathy is
Homeopathy is a system of alternative medicine founded by the German physician Samuel Hahnemann in the 1790s. Practitioners prescribe remedies prepared by repeated dilution and shaking, selected according to the person’s symptoms and overall characteristics.
2Historical origins
Hahnemann developed the system in an era when conventional treatments such as bloodletting could do harm. It spread across Europe and to India in the 19th century, where homeopathy is now widely practised and regulated through recognised degree programmes such as the B.H.M.S.
3Traditional principles
Homeopathic practice traditionally rests on “like cures like” (substances that cause symptoms in healthy people are used in tiny doses to treat similar symptoms), serial dilution, and individualised prescribing. These principles are not supported by established scientific understanding of chemistry or physiology.
4What a consultation involves
A homeopathic consultation usually involves a conversation about your main concern, your medical history, lifestyle, sleep, appetite and emotional wellbeing. With Dr. Jain it also includes review of relevant reports and, where appropriate, advice on investigations.
5Current scientific evidence
Major reviews of the research, including by Australia’s National Health and Medical Research Council in 2015, have concluded there is no reliable evidence that homeopathy is effective for treating any health condition. Reported benefits may reflect natural recovery, the effect of attention and expectation, or other treatments used at the same time.
6Why diagnosis and conventional care matter
Many symptoms can signal serious conditions. Seeking a proper diagnosis, and continuing evidence-based treatment, is the safest course. Delaying or replacing effective treatment can be harmful, especially for conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, infections, kidney stones, cancer or mental-health conditions.
