When to Seek Medical Care for Skin Problems

Most rashes are harmless, but some skin changes need prompt assessment. Here is how to tell the difference.

Skin reflects what is happening in and around the body. Many rashes settle on their own, yet some need a doctor’s attention.

See a doctor promptly if you notice

  • A rash with fever, breathing difficulty or swelling of the face
  • Skin that is rapidly spreading, very painful, or blistering
  • A mole that changes in size, colour or shape, or a sore that does not heal
  • Signs of infection: warmth, pus or increasing redness

Everyday care

Gentle cleansers, regular moisturising, avoiding known irritants and protecting skin from the sun support skin health. Avoid applying unknown creams or steroid ointments without advice.

Why diagnosis matters

Eczema, fungal infections, psoriasis and allergic reactions can look similar but are treated differently. A dermatologist can identify the cause and recommend suitable treatment.
