Understanding Seasonal Allergies

Why symptoms flare with the seasons, practical ways to reduce exposure, and when to get tested.

Seasonal allergies, often called hay fever or allergic rhinitis, occur when the immune system reacts to airborne particles such as pollen, dust and mould.

Typical symptoms

Sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, itchy eyes and throat, and sometimes cough or wheeze. Symptoms that peak at particular times of year suggest a seasonal trigger.

Reducing exposure

  • Keep windows closed during high-pollen or dusty periods
  • Wash bedding regularly in hot water
  • Shower and change clothes after being outdoors
  • Use a clean, damp cloth for dusting rather than a dry one

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if symptoms disrupt sleep or daily life, if you have wheeze or breathlessness, or if over-the-counter measures are not helping. Seek emergency help for swelling of the lips or throat or difficulty breathing.
